Issues Affecting Agusan Marsh

In the  Marsh and in the surrounding communities, the overall effect to the   communities bring about by the continuing threat to biodiversity by the unsustainable use of resources, improper waste disposal and the alleged pollution of heavy metals  caused  degradation  in the basin.

These problems have resulted to siltation and pollution of rivers and lakes as well as to destruction/fragmentation of habitats that continue to threaten flora and fauna species.  If these problems continue to aggravate, they will eventually affect the livelihood and health conditions of the people living in the marsh and even surrounding communities.

The problems on unsustainable use of resources is manifested in the following

a.    Timber poaching and mining upstream areas.

b.    Hunting and trapping of wildlife;

c.    Electro- fishing

d.    Lack of accessible basic social services for the marsh communities

e.    Unregulated human occupancy/Settlements;

f.    Farming on the banks, which is number one identified causes of riverbed siltation.

g.    Expansion of oil palm plantation  in the Marsh, and

h.    Lack of research studies on the breeding/spawning cycle of birds, mammals/fishes.

e.        Problems related to presence of Water Hyacinth

> Hindrance to water transport
> Micro-habitat for variety of diseases vectors
> Increased evapo-transpiration
> Problems related to fishing
